Canōpus, i, m., = Κάνωβος, rarely Κάνωπος; cf. Quint. 1, 5, 13. An islandtown in Lower Egypt, on the western mouth of the Nile; acc. to the fable, named after the pilot of Menelaus, who died there: Canopus (Canobus in Serv. ad Verg. G. 4, 287), Mel. 2, 7, 6; Plin. 5, 31, 34, § 128; Tac. A. 2, 60: famosus, i. e. notorious for its luxury, Juv. 15, 46; cf. id. 1, 26; 6, 84; Sen. Ep. 37, 3.
